Abstract
Digital thread standards for both dimensional metrology and industrial machine tool operations have been defined in standards organizations and successfully implemented in several commercial manufacturing production operations. A next step is to define a standards-based digital thread for on-machine dimensional measurement. We present use cases describing on-machine dimensional measurement tasks commonly performed on the manufacturing shop floor. We then present information elements required by those use cases. Activity diagrams are developed to better understand and clarify these use cases and to ensure that requisite information elements are exposed. The information elements will be presented for consideration to the relevant manufacturing digital thread standards bodies. This work is not expected to lead to a separate standard, but will be incorporated into existing standards. A precise taxonomy and terminology for on-machine metrology is also offered to address an unnecessarily high level of ambiguity and imprecision in on-machine measurement terminology, without utterly forsaking common usage.Citation
